We are working with an Interior Designer on a beautiful Shingle Style home on Lake Winnipesaukee. This home has a fabulous master bedroom on the first floor with unparalleled views of the lake. At first the Designer had planned for Roman Shades in this room, but the expanse of glass, and the need for privacy made that many cords impractical. Our solution was to choose 4 1/2″ painted maple plantation shutters. The shutters will have a center divider rail at the mullion of the window allowing for privacy to the shoulder and maintain light and views above. The difficult part of the planning is in the french door immediately adjacent to one of the windows. Aligning a center rail in the french door exactly with the rail in the window shutters will be tricky, but some careful measuring and a close relationship with the fabricator will insure that the outcome will be perfect. We can’t wait to see the finished room and share some photos with you.

We continue to work hard to find eco-friendly window treatment options for our clients. We have a very large selection of natural woven wood and grass cloth shades. And we have been adding drapery fabrics, blinds, shades and shutters that meet various definitions of being green.
When you decide that you want to choose ‘green’ products, you need to decide in what way will the product be green. You can choose a totally natural product with no manmade parts or pieces, but if it needs to travel halfway around the world to get to you; is it eco-friendly? Being green is not easy, it takes time and an understanding of the products offered and how you will use the products. We can help you choose just the right window treatment design for your natural home.

Layer Fabric at the Window for a Great Look
Using different fabrics in layers at the window creates a soft inviting feeling. This window might have had an even softer, more inviting feeling if sheer draperies were added as an under layer instead of the wood blinds.

One of our primary concerns when working with clients is safety. We always ask about small children and even pets in the home before making any recomendations for specific products. If you have small children or pets in the home you really should take a walk around the home and see if your window treatments pose a potential risk. Look for cords that dangle close to the floor or near furniture that a child might climb on. Would it be possible for these cords to become wrapped around a childs neck? Is there a way to hook the cords up out of the reach of a child?
You can learn much more at the website of the Window Covering Safety Council. They even offer free kits to retrofit most window coverings.

Flat Roman Shades with Washable Fabric
Spent the morning with new clients in a beautiful victorian home in Cambridge. This is a very active young family and one of the first things the client asked for was that any fabric needed to be washable. Our solution was roman shades from a company we love called Shadow Inside. These Inside shades are made in Belgium with many washable fabrics. The fabric can be removed easily from the headrail and thrown in the washing machine!

Is it time to update those old bedroom shades? Well before you do, be sure to take a look at the newest innovation from Hunter Douglas; Duette Architella Shades. These shades use a uniqe honeycomb design that has a cell within the cell. This multi cell design provides increased insulation values, and actually adds beauty to the shade. The extra layer of fabric and air space allows the light to filter through the face fabric even if there is a room darkening lining in the center, allowing the shade to remain three dimensional in appearance. Have you seen what’s happening with roller shades lately? We can’t get over the selection of beautiful fabrics available from suede to sheer linens, screen shades and even natural grasses are being used for these timeless shades. To further personalize your choice, you can add trim or banding, place the roller in a cassette or cover it with a coordinating valance, add a decorative hem, or even a decorative rod exposed at the hem. If that isn’t enough, how about using a remote control to operate the shade?
