Sliding Glass Doors are also a challenge to choose appropriate coverings. Darpery panels on docrative or trversing rods are always a great option. Vertical blinds are still the most economical choice but are not as fashionable at the moment. Plantation Shutters can be mounted on a track and slide just as the doors do.
Honeycomb shades, best known under the Duette Brand from Hunter Douglas work beautifully when turned vertically. Hunter Douglas calls this product Vertiglide. The fabric is suspended from a track above the door and the user just pulls or pushes a handle mounted on a moving metal rail. This product is a wonderful insulator and has a very small stack; just over six inches!
A very elegant and attractive option for sliders is Hunter Douglas’s Luminette Sheers. This is a cloth vertical blind with a sheer attached to each vein. A blind and a drapery combined in one product.

Shutters are a great option for sliding glass doors
Shutters are one of the best choices for both sliding glass and french doors. This picture of a home in Boxford, MA is of sliding or bi-pass shutters that are mounted with a cantilevered header and no side frame pieces. The header included a groove for the homeowner to use as a plate shelf for decorative items, and was finished with a beautiful crown molding. These doors are actually french doors rather than sliders. The homeowner wanted to maintain the full glass view and so chose this option rather than french door shutters that are permanently mounted on the doors.

Shutters are perfect fro sliding glass doors in Stratham. NH
Shutters are the perfect covering for sliding glass doors. In this application, we had some depth to mount the shutters directly to the jamb. In order to accomodate the handle on the slider, we actually fabricated a low profile handle in our workshop. This new handle allowed the louvers to tilt fully.

I enjoyed helping a new client with a beautiful home that was converted from an old train station along the river in Kittery Point Maine this morning. The home has an over sized sliding glass door in the living room facing the river and marsh. The nine foot door affords spectacular views, but also lets in substantial drafts.
Our solution was to use the new Architella fabric from Hunter Douglas Duette in the Vertiglide, or vertical configuration. This wonderful product slides on a suspended track and closes from either side to the center of the door. This installation will provide an ‘R’ value of almost 7, far above her existing door alone and far out pacing most other window treatment options. Best of all the view is not lost when the shades are open; the stack to the side is only six inches! Link
