Shutters in Exeter, NH

We recently met a new client in a beautiful brick colonial in Exeter, NH that was struggling with determining how to assure privacy while still having natural light and maintaining the view.

Our solution was simple, we suggested plantation shutters with a center rail. The client could keep the louvers on the lower half of the window closed to maintain privacy from the busy sidewalk, and keep the upper louvers tilted open for light and view.

Plantation Shutters in Tuftonborough, NH

We are working with an Interior Designer on a beautiful Shingle Style home on Lake Winnipesaukee. This home has a fabulous master bedroom on the first floor with unparalleled views of the lake. At first the Designer had planned for Roman Shades in this room, but the expanse of glass, and the need for privacy made that many cords impractical. Our solution was to choose 4 1/2″ painted maple plantation shutters. The shutters will have a center divider rail at the mullion of the window allowing for privacy to the shoulder and maintain light and views above. The difficult part of the planning is in the french door immediately adjacent to one of the windows. Aligning a center rail in the french door exactly with the rail in the window shutters will be tricky, but some careful measuring and a close relationship with the fabricator will insure that the outcome will be perfect. We can’t wait to see the finished room and share some photos with you.

Plantation Shutters in Kennebunkport Maine

Just completed an installation in a beautiful home in the old port. Just wish I had brought my camera! Oh well, we will be going back for more work shortly.  These were 3 1/2″ louver single panel shutters with a hidden rear tilt rod to preserve the water view. Mounted directly to the jamb with solid brass shutters; and fit like a glove.

Plantation Shutters in Charlestown, MA

We are working with a new client who was referred to us by a neighbor whom we had installed shutters for a year or so ago. This is an older townhouse that has been seperated into condos. Large windows and very tall ceilings.  The window moldings are quite ornate and add charm to the space. Unfortunately, the building has settled over the years causing the windows to become out of sqaure. Our solution was to utilize a ‘Z’ frame that will still allow an inside mounted shutter, but will also have a face piece of molding to cover any variance in the light gap. This molding will not affect the overall appearance of the original moldings and will allow the homeowner to enjoy the shutters for many years.

Custom Painted Shutters in Amesbury, MA

We are working with a client to complete a project we did last year. Originally we created a unique shading system that combined natural grass cloth shade material that filtered the light of the sun, but diminished the UV effects, and kept the room cooler. the shades were finished with custom valances that his the shade when raised. The bedrooms and bathrooms were completed with painted maple shutters installed to appear as if they were part of the original wood work.

Now the client has finally completed the last room in the home, a small lavatory off the main living area. This room was faux painted with a taupe background and a slightly mettalic over coat. We will be crafting custom plantation shutters and finishing them to match this faux finish. I look forward to the end result. Link

Plantation Shutters in Andover, MA

Just got back from meeting with a new client in Andover, Massachussets. This client has an unusual situation that we need to address. The client has recently purchased an existing older home that is being extensively re-modeled. In the original design of the new home, the master bedroom was reduced in size by a substantial amount to include a master closet. The bedroom itself was not nearly large enough, but obviously, a closet was necessary as well. The solution was to utilize underused space in the attic. An open stairway was created to the new closet, and the room has a much larger feel.

The problem was that there is a window at the foot of this new stairway. With two young children in the house, the client was understandably concerned about the safety of her children in the event of a fall on the stairs. Additionally, a railing is required by code for the stairway; this railing crosses the window diagonally. Our solution was basswood plantation shutters for the entire room. Beyond the light control, privacy and insulation benefits of shutters; the rigidity of the shutter is a perfect barrier at this window to prevent a potential accident. The railing will prevent the shutter from being mounted as normal with hinges, so the panel will be mounted using heavy duty magnets in the four corners to allow removal for washing the window.

The client had spoken to four other window treatment companies before a neighbor suggested she call us. The solution was obvious to us, but only because we are true experts in the properties of all window treatments, but especially plantation shutters. Call us today to solve your unique situation.

Sliding Shutters in Boxford, MA

Shutters are a great option for sliding glass doors

Shutters are a great option for sliding glass doors

Shutters are one of the best choices for both sliding glass and french doors. This picture of a home in Boxford, MA is of sliding or bi-pass shutters that are mounted with a cantilevered header and no side frame pieces. The header included a groove for the homeowner to use as a plate shelf for decorative items, and was finished with a beautiful crown molding. These doors are actually french doors rather than sliders. The homeowner wanted to maintain the full glass view and so chose this option rather than french door shutters that are permanently mounted on the doors.

Double Hung Plantation Shutters in Boxford, MA

Double Hung Plantation Shutters

Double Hung Plantation ShuttersDouble Hung Shutters Closed

We are often asked about shutters that can swing open at the top while the lwer panels remain in the window. This type of shutters is called double hung, and are used most often over double hung windows. The benefit of this shutter design is the ease of controlling the light and the view. The downside to this design is that there is gennerally an increase in cost, and there is a greater amount of light and view blocked when the upper and lower panels are in the window. The greatest negative to this design in our opinion is that the sitelines at eye level are the most affected. The top rail of the lower panels are generally about 4″ tall and the lower rail of the upper panels are usually about 3″. So this means that there is a solid 7″ crossing the window right at your eye level. We most often recommend a standard single panel  in height with a center dividing rail. This affords the homeowner to tilt the upper and lower louvers independently, and provides much more light and view when tilted open.

Shutters on your sliding glass doors in Stratham, NH

Shutters are perfect fro sliding glass doors in Stratham. NH

Shutters are perfect fro sliding glass doors in Stratham. NH

Shutters are the perfect covering for sliding glass doors. In this application, we had some depth to mount the shutters directly to the jamb. In order to accomodate the handle on the slider, we actually fabricated a low profile handle in our workshop. This new handle allowed the louvers to tilt fully.
