Flat Roman Shades with Washable Fabric

Flat Roman Shades with Washable Fabric

Spent the morning with new clients in a beautiful victorian home in Cambridge. This is a very active young family and one of the first things the client asked for was that any fabric needed to be washable.  Our solution was roman shades from a company we love called Shadow Inside. These Inside shades are made in Belgium with many washable fabrics. The fabric can be removed easily from the headrail and thrown in the washing machine!

Honeycomb Shades in Portsmouth, NH

Is it time to update those old bedroom shades? Well before you do, be sure to take a look at the newest innovation from Hunter Douglas; Duette Architella Shades. These shades use a uniqe honeycomb design that has a cell within the cell. This multi cell design provides increased insulation values, and actually adds beauty to the shade. The extra layer of fabric and air space allows the light to filter through the face fabric even if there is a room darkening lining in the center, allowing the shade to remain three dimensional in appearance. Have you seen what’s happening with Roller Shades lately?

Have you seen what’s happening with roller shades lately? We can’t get over the selection of beautiful fabrics available from suede to sheer linens, screen shades and even natural grasses are being used for these timeless shades. To further personalize your choice, you can add trim or banding, place the roller in a cassette or cover it with a coordinating valance, add a decorative hem, or even a decorative rod exposed at the hem. If that isn’t enough, how about using a remote control to operate the shade?

Plantation Shutters in Kennebunkport Maine

Just completed an installation in a beautiful home in the old port. Just wish I had brought my camera! Oh well, we will be going back for more work shortly.  These were 3 1/2″ louver single panel shutters with a hidden rear tilt rod to preserve the water view. Mounted directly to the jamb with solid brass shutters; and fit like a glove.

Have You Seen Pirouette?

Control Light in a Whole New Way with Pirouette

Control Light in a Whole New Way with Pirouette

Have you seen the new Pirouette shades from Hunter Douglas? This hybrid shade appears to be a roman shade as it is lowered into the window. But, as you continue to pull on the cord, the individual pleats come together in a fold revealing a sheer behind. The sheer affords privacy and uv protection during the day, and the semi-opaque or opaque face fabric provides full privacy in the evening.

Sliding Door Window Coverings

Sliding Glass Doors are also a challenge to choose appropriate coverings. Darpery panels on docrative or trversing rods are always a great option. Vertical blinds are still the most economical choice but are not as fashionable at the moment. Plantation Shutters can be mounted on a track and slide just as the doors do.

Honeycomb shades, best known under the Duette Brand from Hunter Douglas work beautifully when turned vertically. Hunter Douglas calls this product Vertiglide. The fabric is suspended from a track above the door and the user just pulls or pushes a handle mounted on a moving metal rail. This product is a wonderful insulator and has a very small stack; just over six inches!

A very elegant and attractive option for sliders is Hunter Douglas’s Luminette Sheers. This is a cloth vertical blind with a sheer attached to each vein. A blind and a drapery combined in one product.

Door Window Treatments

Doors can be very difficult to treat, and often dictate the options for the rest of the room. I would like to take the next few entries and discuss some of our favorite options. To begin with we will discuss swinging or french doors with full glass.

Assuming the door is active, we try to stay away from havier prodcuts such as wood blinds. When the door swings, the blind will rattle, and eventually the mounting scres will become loose. Sheer or lightweight fabric gathered on a rod at the top and bottom is a classic choice but many other options are out there. Cordless honeycomb shades with the top down option are always a good choice as are roman or grass cloth shades with the edges bound. These last two options require a cleat mounted on the door to keep the cords neat and away from the hinges.

Plantation shutters work wonderfully on french doors. The positive mounting system removes the issues of the wood blinds above, and the handle is dealt with through a decorative cut out in the frame.
